Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

Anatomy is the sole of MBBS 1st year. It is the most difficult and fearful subject of 1st year. Even it is too vast. Students study it whole of the year and get less time to study other subjects like physiology and biochemistry. So they study these subjects during exam times. Many a times, you will feel as really exhausted while reading anatomy and you may feel that you are stuck here. But don't worry because after this year, you will get a lot of time to enjoy.

Anatomy is all about what is present where in body?  So it deals with bones and thier attachments, muscles, organs and Thier histology. So it opens up our body from inside so that you can imagine the relation of various structures with each other.  Its knowledge act as basis to understand the concepts of subjects of following years like pathology, surgery , opthalmology etc.

When you go to your dissection hall first time, you may get even fainted but with time, you will develop habit of doing experiments with dead bodies and it's awkward smell. So here is the list of all the books required for anatomy

1. B.D. CHAURASIA

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is the standard book of anatomy. It is your Bible for 1st year. Very popularly used book in India and called ' Lal kitaab'. Even our past generations are used to study this book. It has 3 volumes. The content is displayed in easy language and in headings  and is nicely organised that you can easily write in exams. This is the main advantage of this book. Even fully labelled colourfull diagrams are also given that you can easily draw in diagrams. Flow charts and tables are given wherever necessary.

The ideal strategy is to see YouTube videos  from many channels like Akram jaffer etc. then read it from book. These videos explain the concepts in a way that you can understand and remember. This book also contains content for practical purposes. Like bones and it's anatomy, muscles etc are given in a good way. Surface anatomy and radio anatomy is also given. So you need not to buy separate book for it.

Don't study the irrelevant content given at front and in the chapters. Just read the important topics. Don't just rattafy it but learn the topics by making concepts. All the important topics for exams are there in this book. No topic is missing. Also along with book, CDs and charts are given free that may be helpful for you.

2. GRAYS ANATOMY

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is the internationally accepted book of anatomy. It has 2 versions. Never use its bigger version. This is because it is too lenghy and thick and it's language is so difficult. So it takes much time to study it. It is not suited for Indian medical students.

It's student version is good for Indian students. So I recommend you have its PDF file in your mobile. This book has beautiful 3d diagrams by which you can visualise anatomy in a better way . So you can make your base more strong and build good concept. You can also read its theory but don't use this book for exams because there are big paragraphs in it. No pointers and headings are there like that in bd chaurasia.

3. VISHRAM SINGH

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is a good alternative to bd chaurasia. But its content is not complete and is displayed in paragraphs rather than points. So personally, I don't studied this book but you may use it as a reference book.

4. NETTLER'S ATLAS

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is a supplementary book. I would suggest you to keep its PDF file. This is because it has beautiful illustrated diagrams that are natural looking and precise to such a detail that you won't confuse regarding positions of various structures. So you must have it.

5. DUTTA

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is a higher level book that contains very much content that is out of UG level . Moreover, its language is so boring. So never ever touch it.

6. SNELL'S

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is good for detailed clinical aspects but is not ideal for exams. So leave it.

7. CUNNINGHAM DISSECTOR

Teachers  will recommend you to buy this book. But I would suggest you not to waste your money into this useless book. This is because you will never study it throughout the year. It has very complicated theory and complicated diagrams that are far away from theory purposes. These are only for dissection purposes and hence is used by teachers. So if you need, then you can issue from library or from your seniors.

EMBRYOLOGY

1. INDERBIR SINGH

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

It is the best book for embryology. Contains colourful diagrams and nicely presented  and simple language that you can easily write in exams. Its initial 6 chapters are most important as these are basics for rest of the book. So read them initially as students find embryology somewhat difficult to understand.

2 VISHRAM SINGH

It is a good alternative to IB Singh. You may use it as reference book but IB Singh is enough.

3. LANGMAN'S

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

You can use it for concept building. It has good diagrams and it make the subject interesting. But it requires time to study. You don't need it and nor you get time to study it. So you can just leave it.

HISTOLOGY

1. INDERBIR SINGH

It is the best book for histology for both theory and practicals. Good diagrams are given and the content is also relevant. You can prepare your file from it easily.

2. DI FIORE'S ATLAS

Books to study anatomy in mbbs 1st year

If you have good interest in histology ( like me) and you want to know that how the histological diagrams really look in microscope, then this book is for you. Its diagrams are really awesome and you can relate them to your practic slides. But is not required for exams.

NEUROANATOMY

1. BD CHAURASIA

You can use BDC itself for neuroanatomy. I also studied it and it contains all the topics required for exams. Its advantage is that it contains topics in concise way, in points and you will feel it easier to study. But most students don't use it

2. VISHRAM SINGH

It is used by most of the students. It is more elaborate than BDC but is ideal for exams, has simplified text and easy diagrams. You can also use IB Singh alternatively.

3. SNELL'S

It is too vast and lenghy and difficult language. So just avoid it.

GENERAL ANATOMY

1. VISHRAM SINGH

It is very good. Contains detailed information of every topics. So you can easily study it for exams.

2. BD CHAURASIA

It is like a short book. Thin and contains content in concise way. So, if you don't want to merge in much detail, this book is for you. It is also used by many students.

After that, I would like to thank you reading my post. Dont take much panic. And enjoy your college life.
