How to prepare for psm practicals

PSM is an important subject in MBBS 3rd year. Its practical exam consist of spotters, epidemiological exercise, statistical exercise, family viva and grand viva. So, here is the proper guide for you how to prepare for psm practicals.

Must read -- Important viva questions in psm

1. Nutrition spotters

You must know calories, protiens and public health importance of following foods. And also, you should be able to identify the spots. Don't read about other food items, just those mentioned below are important.

Wheat
Rice
Maize
Bengal gram (other pulses)
Apple
Mango
Orange
Banana
Pomogranete
Papaya
Oil

You must identify following spotters and know about route of administration, dose, shedule, storing temperature, wheather it is live attenuated or killed.

BCG
OPV
DPT
Hepatitis B
Hib conjugate
Measles
MMR
Typhoid
Tetanus toxoid
Vitamin A supplements
IPV
Pentavalent ( DPT + Hep. B + Hib )
Rota virus ( less imp.)
Rabies vaccine
Ice packs

For vivas, these topics are important -
- National immunisation shedule
- Cold chain is v.v. Imp topic. Read it fully ( pay special attention to the arrangement of vaccines in ILR )
- VVM
- Heat sensitive vaccines -- OPV > Measles > BCG.
- Cold sensitive vaccines -- Hepatitis B > DPT and TT.
- Light sensitive vaccines -- Measles and BCG ( So, BCG vaccine vial is dark coloured)
- Adverse effects following immunisation ( just enumeration).

3. Contraceptives spotters

You must identify the given spotters and should know about Thier shedule, composition, mechanism of action, side effects etc.

• Male and female Condoms ( barrier method)
• Lippes loop, Cu- T, Multiload 375 ( Intra uterine devices)
• MALA - N , MALA - D (Oral pills)
• Post coital contraceptive pills
• Norplant ( subdermal implants)
• DMPA/ Depo provera (injectable contraceptive)
• Antara ( it is injectable contraceptive)
• Saheli and Chhaya ( non hormonal contraceptive pill )

For viva, read it along with other methods of contraception like coitus interruptus, absteinence, Rhythm method, lactational amenorrhea, terminal methods  etc.
- Definition of family planning, eligible couple, target couple.

4. Entomology

You must identify following mosquitoes and read thier breeding habits, resting habits, mode of disease transmission and disease caused.

• Aedes ( Tiger mosquito) ( It breeds in artificial water)
• Aenopheles ( It breeds in clean water)
• Culex ( It breeds in dirty water )
• Rat flea
• Itch Mite
• Sandfly
• Housefly
• Ticks

For vivas, you must know --
- Enumerate 5 water borne diseases and food borne diseases.
- Diseases transmitted by flies.
- Breeding and resting habits of different mosquitoes.

5. Instruments and models

You must identify following instruments, Thier use and public health importance

Sling psychrometer
Sound level meter
Fotin's barometer
Rain guage
Max. And min. thermometer
Lux Meter

Models - you need to identify these models and explain them in brief.
Slow sand filter
Rapid sand filter
Bore hole latrine
Trench latrine
Sanitary well
Shallow and deep well
Sewage treatment plant

6. Insecticides

You must identify these insecticides and Thier use, mechanism of action etc.

DDT
Malathion
Lindane ( BHC )
Abate ( temephos)
Fenthion
Paris green
Larvicidal Oil
Pyrethrum

7. Disinfectants

Bleaching powder
Salvon
Phenol
Cresol
Dettol
Chlorine tablets

8. Epidemiological exercise

Learn the formulas of following terms and practice questions on them more and more. You will be given questions and you have to calculate following terms.

Crude birth date
Crude death rate
Age specific death rate
Case fatality rate
Under 5 proportionate mortality rate
Incidence rate
Secondary attack rate
Sensitivity of screening
Specifically
Positive and negative predictive value

Dependency ratio
General fertility rate
General marital fertility rate
Age specific fertility rate
Age specific marital fertility rate
Total fertility rate
Total marital fertility rate
Maternal mortality rate
Infant mortality rate
Perinatal mortality rate
Neonatal mortality rate
Post neonatal mortality rate
Under 5 mortality rate

9. Statistical exercise

You must be able to solve following questions -

Chi square test ( it is v.v. imp. It is asked in every practical exam. Don't go to your exam without knowing it).
t test
Standard deviation
Standard error

10. Family viva

You have to present the family alloted to you to the examiner. It includes family composition, socio economic status, environment sanitation, cross section of house, spot map, socio environment diagnosis.
