Books to study microbiology in mbbs 2nd year

Microbiology is basically the biology of microorganisms. That is, it help us to understand about various microorganisms like bacterias, viruses, parasites - Thier structure, diseases they cause and how can we diagnose them. In your practicals also, you have to study these organisms in your whole year.

It is somewhat boring subject of 2nd year. Boring in the sense that lab diagnosis of various bacterias seems just similar to each other. So it becomes somewhat difficult to learn the lab diagnosis. Virology, I also found it more difficult and boring. But still it is not as much difficult as other subjects like pathology and pharmacology and you can easily prepare it for your university exams.

1. BAVEJA

It is a standard book of Microbiology. Its content is enough for exam purposes and contains all the topics which are required for exams in neighter too detailed and nor too concise way and in a nicely presented way. Its language is also good and easily understandable. Hence, it is a student friendly book. So by reading this book alone also, you can pass the exams. It is very likely that you mix the lab diagnosis of various bacterias and viruses. So my suggestion is to make mnemonics or stories of individual organisms so that you can easily write in your exams.

2. APURBA SHASTRY

It is also a standard book. My suggestion is to read this book along with Baveja. It is somewhat more elaborate than Baveja. Everything is in point wise manner and contains various pictures and diagrams like that of various diseases and microscopies that help to understand it better.

The concepts are explained in a better way with flow charts and diagrams like in oncogenesis and Microscopes.  So you can make good concepts by reading it thoroughly. Though some topics are given in much more details that it become difficult to digest it at UG level so just don't study them from this book . I find it somewhat more easier and better than Baveja. Even the proffesors of our college also study this book.

3. ANANTHNARAYAN AND   PANIKER

This book seems to be a copypaste of Baveja. Even the wording is also exactly same. but it is comparatively more elaborate, more bulky and thick. So you read this or Baveja is just same thing. My suggestion is to use it for reference.

4. CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY   MADE REDICULOUSLY SIMPLE 

It is a simple book whose language is so much easy. It contains various cartoons and funny pictures explaining the concepts !!! which make the subject much interesting. but the content is much less and is not sufficient for exams. Many chapters and topics are even missing. So is not much helpful.

5. ARORA AND ARORA

It is again same as Baveja. But I found it somewhat more elaborate. Its content is given in paragraphs rather than in headings and points that you see in baveja. So, you can just avoid it.


                  PARASITOLOGY 

It is quite easy and interesting subject as it contains  life cycles of various parasites that are quite interesting. So you can easily prepare it later during exam times. It will not bother you much.
Whenever you study it, firstly study the most important topics of the book that are Malaria, Entamoeba, Lieshmania, Tenia Solium and saginata, Hydatid cyst, Ascaris, Wuchereria, Larva migrans, Nematodes classification, Stool examination ( Malaria is v.v. Imp). Read them thoroughly in full detail.

Then read less important topics like Nagleria, Acanthamoeba, Toxoplasma, Giardia lamblia, Chagas disease, Cryptosporidium parvam, Balantidium, Acyclostoma duodonale, Stercoralis strongoloidis, Enterobius .

5. ARORA AND ARORA 

It is the best book for parasitology. It contains excellent flow charts of life cycles of various parasites and awasome diagrams and pictures. It makes the subject so easy and interesting. It alone is sufficient and no need to read any other book.
Though there are other books also which are available for parasitology like Chatterjee, Chakraborty and Paniker. But I don't studied them because Arora and Arora is sufficient for exams. Moreover, you don't get much time to go through multiple books.
