Books to study pharmacology in mbbs 2nd year
Pharmacology is the main subject in mbbs 2nd year. Just as anatomy in 1st year. It is also essential for you because a doctor must know the drugs used for treatment of any disease. Even your relatives or friends can ask u about the medicine used for disease.
It might be a difficult subject for a medical student because to rattafy the classification and names of those drugs which are alien for us is a huge burden. It becomes so irritating when u are not able to learn the drugs even after reading it so many times. And we usually forget these drugs names in exams. But overall I would say that it is an interesting subject (compared to that boring microbiology and pathology). This is because it contains the treatment of the common diseases that we see in our life like malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhoea , heart attack, Asthma, epilepsy, headache and fever etc. And reading the actions of drugs on various organs of our body is quite interesting. We require the basic knowledge of physiology to understand its concepts.
1. K.D. TRIPADHI
It is a standard book of Pharmacology. I would greatly recommend it to understand the concepts of Pharmacology. It is a very good book. Appropriate diagrams and flow charts are given wherever necessary.
Classifications are given best in this book.
Classifications are given best in this book.
For every topic, firstly read the classification then mechanism of action of drygs and pharmacological actions then its uses and Adverse drug reactions. Don't just rattafy it but understand the concept. Because you will easily forget the topic if you just rattafy it. You can make mnemonics to remember it because these help a lot to recapitulate during exams. Everything is given in big paragraphs. So, you have to point out the important points from these paragraphs and underline them. Don't merge into details. You can take help of youtube and other sources to understand the concepts.
One thing I don't liked about this book is that it's language is somewhat tough and there are many places where it becomes very difficult to digest it like cardiovascular system - digoxin actions and arrythmias. So in that cases, you can take help of other books like Sharma and Sharma.

2. SHARMA AND SHARMA
Read this book along with KDT. It is a very student friendly book and contains everything in the easiest language as possible. The language is so easy and simple that u will feel that teacher is just sitting beside u and explaining the concepts and topics are also complete. So you will feel very comfortable reading this book. So don't miss this book in 2nd year. Personally, if I talk about myself, then this book was a boon for me in my 2nd year.
Some topics that are written very nicely (even not in KDT) are -
1 Heart failure ( I can't understand anything in it from kdt)
2 Skeletal muscle relaxant MOA
3 alfa and beta receptors are best in this book
4 H pylori
5 Sympathomimetic drug classification
6 Read loading and maintenance dose here
7 Arrhythmia ( see the diagrams)
and there are a lot of other topics including general pharmacology
The topic that u find most difficult ,I suggest you to make its notes because it will become easy for you after making notes.
3. LIPPINCOT
It is a simple book that contain everything in simplified way but don't take it as a standard book because u can't pass by this book alone . As it don't contains topics in much detail and some topics are even missing. You can't get good marks by it. But it is helpful because many topics are displayed in much easy way with good diagrams. At the end of every chapter, its summary is given in form of tables. Take it as a reference book
4. SHANBAG
Many students study it as it is a student friendly book and is very helpful during exams . It is a concise book and contains everything in notes wise manner. So is very helpful because you don't have to study those big paragraphs and find out the important points like in kdt. You will get readymade notes. So I would greatly recommend it as a reference book.
But I don't studied it much because I focused on KDT and Sharma and Sharma.
6. KATZUNG
It is a foreign author book and of higher level. It is helpful for pg exam preparation. But I don't studied anything from it. because I found its pattern so unique that is not accurate for an indian medical student for the university exams. nor I found its language easy. If you study this book for exams, then you will get totally confused and you can't make a good concept. So I think that it is a wasteful book. Don't study it.
7. SATOSKAR AND BHANDARKAR
I studied very few topics from it like General anaesthesia. U can take it as a reference book but is not much helpful.
At last, I would thank you for reading my post and all the best for your studies. You are now in your honeymoon period. So don't take much stress and enjoy our current phase of life.
