Books to study physiology in mbbs 1st year

Physiology is an important subject of MBBS 1st year. It is all about the basic functioning of the various systems of our body. This is important because if we know about normal functioning of our body, only then we can understand abnormal functionings. So its concepts act as a base to understand the subjects like pharmacology, pathology etc. CNS is the most difficult and lenghy chapter of physiology. So, pay special attention to it.

As in our 1st year, we have more difficult subject Anatomy. So, students study physiology during tests and in exam times. So when you study during your whole year, focus on building strong concepts because it will help you to revise easily during your final exams. Physiology is a relatively easy subject and it will not bother you much as anatomy. Even you have tutorials and seminars that helps you to revise the topics. So attend them properly and never miss them because these helps a lot to prepare your topic.

It is the most favoured book by the students for physiology. Its advantage is that it contains topics in point wise manner. So, it becomes very easy to grasp a topic and write in exam. Appropriate flow charts and tables are given wherever necessary. But, when I studied this book, I feel difficulty in some topics to develop good concept. In many topics, you will just rattafy it but you will not have good understanding regarding it. Especially, excretory system is written really bad in this book. Because it is not fully explained but just summary is given. I was not able to understand anything in excretory system from it. But overall, I will say that it is a very good book. Especially for University exams, it is very helpful.

2. INDU KHURANA

It is again a very good book. This book allow you to have in detail understanding of the topic so that you can build good concepts. Buy this book, you will not just rattafy it, but you will understand the concept. So, it is very helpful to score in your class tests and university exams. Our proffesors recommended us this book because the topics are explained in detail in this book so that you can write good answer in exam. The chapter excretory system is given very good here and is properly explained in detail. So study it from here. Remember that no book is complete. So you have to refer to multiple books to gain good knowledge ( this was told by our proffesors). So use this book along with A.K. Jain.

3. SEMBULINGAM

This is your exam saviour book. Most students ( including me) start studying it during final exams to pass in exams. If you haven't studied good during your whole year, then during exams, you can stick to this book. This is because it is really the simplest book. Its language is very simple and content is very less. So it takes less time to read the topics. Its flow charts are really awasome. Like the topic shock is explained in many flow charts which give good understanding. I will recommend you to strongly follow this book for CNS. As CNS is difficult chapter, so many topics like pain pathway, cerebellum, thalamus etc are explained in easy way in this book. But some topics are even missing in it and many are much concised. So, it is a good reference book.

4. GUYTON AND HALL

This book is known as Bible of physiology. It is a foreign author book and very popular. Its feature is that concepts are explained in form of story telling . As you will never forget a story, so it becomes very easy to retain the concepts. Even the concepts are explained beautifully. So, you will enjoy reading it. So, if you want to build strong foundation and concepts, then you should read it. It is also helpful if you are preparing for pg entrance exam.

But the problem with this book is that it is too vast and very much detailed. So, it requires time to study it. So, it is good for concept building, but you will feel difficulty to write in exam. So, it can't help you to score in your exams. So, its your choice whether you want to study it or not but usually, we don't get much time in 1st year to study it. And never take it as a standard book.

5. GANONG

As you had studied NCERT in your 11th and 12th, you remember that in NCERT, every line was different and it was a summary book. So, ganong is also just like that. It is very much to the point and more concise. Basically, it is a review book, not a textbook. That is, it is helpful to read only when you had studied other books and build good concept.

It is a foreign author book and its language is really very hard. The information given in it is beyond UG level. So, never study this book for exams. It is only helpful if you really want to strengthen your concepts. You will get many extra points that are not given in other book. Also, it is very helpful for pg entrance exam preparation.

PRACTICALS

The practicals of physiology are more like fun. You will do experiments with your own blood like checking hemoglobin concentration, blood group etc. You will check your BP, respiratory rate, reflexes and many other tests . So it is very interesting.

For practicals, I would highly recommend you this book. This is because it contains in depth information and also, many question answers after every experiment that are asked in vivas. So, while going to your viva, you will not be feared that what will the examiner ask? As this book contains all the possible questions asked.

2. A.K. JAIN

It is used by many students during thier final practical exams. Because it is short book and don't contain much detailed information. So, it is very helpful during exams .
