Important topics in ophthalmology for mbbs

Ophthalmology is a conceptual subject. You need to build good concept in order to learn it. Also, its concepts are somewhat difficult to understand. So, you really need to give enough time to this subject in order to have good understanding in it. Here are given the important topics in ophthalmology for mbbs that you must study in your 3rd year for university exams.

Important topics in ophthalmology for mbbs


1. Anatomy of the eye


Though you will not get any question from anatomy in your exams, but you must know the basic anatomy of eye because it is the base of the other chapters. You can't understand the diseases of eye if you don't know it's basic anatomy. You need not to study physiology of eye.

2. Optics and refraction


- Hypermetropia is very important - its etiology, types, signs and symptoms, treatment.
- Aphakia and pseudophakia
- Myopia is again v. Imp. Read everything especially pathological myopia often comes in exams.
- Astigmatism - v. Imp
- Anisometropia
- Presbyopia is again v. Imp.
- Contect lenses

3. Conjunctiva


- Trachoma is v. Imp question. Read everything.
- Viral conjunctivitis - In this, most important is acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis.
- Opthalmia neonatorum - very imp.
- Vernal conjunctivitis
- Phlyctenular conjunctivitis
- Acute membranous (diptheric) conjunctivitis
- Pterygium is again imp especially its treatment.

4. Cornea


- Histology- you must know about the various layers of cornea along with diagrams because it is the basic.
- Bacterial corneal ulcer is v.v. imp topic. Its etiology, pathogenesis, clinical, complications and treatment - everything must be cleared.
- Hypopyon corneal ulcer comes as separate question.
- Mycotic corneal ulcer is again imp.
- Herpes simplex keratitis and herpes zooster opthalmicus are again imp. Don't confuse between dendritic and pseudodendritic ulcer.
- Acanthamoeba keratitis ( not much imp)
- Read photo Ophthalmia
- Keratoconus is v. Imp. Especially its signs
- Corneal opacity- again v. Imp.
- Keratoplasty - Its types, indications, donor tissue etc.
- Corneal vascularization is not much imp. So you can leave it.

5. Sclera


It is a small chapter yet important. Read episcleritis and staphylomas from it.

6. Uveal tract


- Uvietis is a v.v. Imp topic. You must know it's classification and etiology. Difference between granulomatous and non granulomatous Uvietis is imp.
- Iridocyclitis often comes in exams.  Its signs and symptoms, treatment must be cleared.
- The table of differential diagnosis of acute red eye is v. Imp. Differences between acute conjunctivitis, Iridocyclitis and acute congestive glaucoma must be cleared. Make proper mnemonics. Even this is asked in viva.
- Endopthalmitis and panopthalmitis

7. Lens


This chapter is one of the most important chapter in opthalmology. You will definitely get one question from this chapter in your exams. Even from viva point of view, it is very imp. So read this chapter by heart.

- Definition of cataract is basic.
- Congenital cataract is v. Imp. Its types and its management should be cleared.
- Age related cataract is again v. Imp. The stages of cortical cataract and nuclear cataract and its signs and symptoms must be cleared.
- Complicated cataract
- For practicals, you must know the various surgeries of cataract and instruments used in it. As these are frequently asked by examiners. But for theory, just read phacoemulsification and its merits.
- Calculation of iol power (biometry) - not much imp.
- Complications of cataract are v. Imp. After cataract can come as separate question.
- Read subluxation.

6. Glaucoma


Glaucoma and cataract, these are the most important chapters of opthalmology for both theory as well as practicals. These are even most difficult also. So you will feel difficulty to develop good concept in these chapters. Take help of YouTube and other sources for good understanding. And read it again and again.

- Drainage of aqueous humour- you must know the trabecular and uveoscleral outflow as it is basic for glaucoma.
- Also, you must know about basic anatomy. Structures in angle of anterior chamber is the favourite question of examiners in viva.

- Definition of glaucoma must be cleared.
- Open angle glaucoma - the most most most important topic. Its symptoms, intraocular pressure changes, Optic nerve head changes along with diagram, Visual field defects, investigations and treatment - read everything from heart.
If you are going in opthalmology viva and you don't know the antiglucoma drugs, then you knows nothing ( its so much imp)

- Angle closure glaucoma - v.v. Imp. Its pathogenesis, stages and treatment - everything. Differential diagnosis of coloured halos is imp.

- Secondary glaucoma is again imp. Mainly, you should know about phacogenic glaucoma and glaucoma due to Uvietis.

7. Vitreous


Read just vitreous haemorrhage.

8. Retina


- Retinal artery occlusions and retinal vein occlusions are v. Imp.
- Hypertensive retinopathy imp. - its signs should be cleared.
- Diabetic retinopathy - v. Imp. Read everything along with management.
- Retinitis pigmentosa
- Retinal detachment is v. Imp. Its 3 types should be cleared. You will find it somewhat difficult to understand and learn.
- Retinoblastoma can come in exam.

9. Neuro-ophthalmology


- Lesions of visual pathway
- Optic neuritis is v. imp.
- Papilledema
- Optic atrophy ( don't confuse it with optic neuritis because I confused it in my final exams)
- Night blindness and tests of colour vision ( these are not much imp. So you can leave them)
- Read toxic optic neuropathy.

10. Strabismus


- You must know the intraocular muscles and Thier actions. Because this is basic for strabismus.
- Heterophoria is imp. Maddox rod is asked in vivas.
- Concomitant squint - its types, examination, treatment. Cover and uncover test must be cleared.
- Incomitant strabismus again imp.
- Difference between paralytic and non paralytic squint.

11. Eyelids


- Practice the structure of upper eyelid by drawing.
- Blepharitis is v.v .imp topic
- External hordeolum (style), internal hordeolum, chalazion, trichiasis are imp.
- Entropion and ectropion. You must know the surgeries for Thier treatment.
- Symblepharon and lagaphthalmos
- Ptosis is v. Imp.

12. Lacrimal apparatus


- Lacrimal gland and lacrimal passages anatomy is basic.
- Structure of tear film and elemination of tears are imp. Examiner may ask you in viva.
- Dry eye disease is v. Imp - etiology, tests , treatment etc.
- Watering eye
- Dacryocystitis ( don't merge in detail of the approaches of surgeries)

13. Orbits


- Proptosis is v. Imp. - read its etiology and investigation
- Orbital cellulitis is imp
- Cavernous sinus thrombosis
- Thyroid eye disease

14. Ocular injuries


- Sympathetic Ophthalmitis is the only imp topic in this chapter.
- Siderosis bulbi and chalcosis are not much imp.

15. Ocular therapeutics


- This chapter is mainly for practical point of view. As you are given various drugs in your viva and you have to tell about them.
- For theory, it is not much imp but you can read viscoelastic substances and fluorescein sodium.

16. Lasers


Read lasers used in opthalmology and mechanism of laser effects.

17. Systemic opthalmology


- Xeropthamia is v. Imp topic. Its stages and treatment must be cleared.
- Read ocular menifestation of AIDS.

18. Community ophthalmology


- Blindness definition, its types and causes of visual impairment.
- Vision 2020 - right to sight. You will also study it in psm.
- Eye banking

Causes of sudden and gradual painless loss of vision are v. Imp for viva.

- Read about the various cycloplegics used in retinoscopy as these are imp.
